Herbs


Alder Bark
Description: Bark of the Alder tree.
Location: Grows mainly MapleClan and some of HemlockClan.
Usage: For tooth pain.
Effect: Eases toothaches.


Yellow Birch Bark
Description: Papery bark that can be peeled off Yellow Birch trees with some careful dexterity.
Location: Grows all over BirchClan.
Usage: By medicine cats to carry herbs, can also be wrapped around broken limbs.
Effect: None.


(Field) Bindweed
Description: Arrow-head shaped leaves with pale white or pink trumpet shaped flowers.
Location: Grows mostly in dry places near twoleg nests.
Usage: Fastens sticks to broken legs to keep them in place.
Effect: Unknown.


American Blackberry Leaves
Description: Prickly leaves from the blackberry bush.
Location: Almost anywhere.
Usage: These leaves are chewed into a pulp.
Effect: Eases the swelling of bee stings.


Borage
Description: Green plant with a deep blue spread-out flower.
Location: Grows mostly in drier areas.
Usage: It is chewed and eaten by nursing queens.
Effect: It produces more and better milk. It also brings down fevers.


(Common) Broom
Description: Shrubs with small leaves and small yellow flowers.
Location: Grows in open fields such as clearing in MapleClan or most of AspenClan.
Usage: It is used to make poultices for broken legs and wounds.
Effect: Unknown


Burdock Root
Description: Tall-stemmed thistle with a sharp smell and dark leaves.
Location: Found in tall grass near streams.
Usage: The root is dug up, the soil is washed off, and then it is chewed into a pulp.
Effect: Lessens and heals the pain of infected rat bites; used to prevent infection of rat bites.


Bedstraw
Description: A plant with fuzzy green balls on long stems. The Canadian variant of Catchweed.
Location: It is common in hedges and other low, shrubby vegetation.
Usage: The burrs are put on the pelt where poultices are, can also be eaten as a laxative.
Effect: Stops poultices from being rubbed off without hurting the skin. Is also a great source of Vitamin C. Since cats with shorter tails often have constipation, Bedstraw is a good and safe laxative.


(Wild Catnip) Catmint
Description: A leafy and delicious-smelling plant.
Location: Commonly near twoleg nests, however grows wild in AspenClan.
Usage: Eaten.
Effect: Can't cure any sort of cough as much as the books like to say it does, it actually only cures bad gas in cats, but it has an amazing effect on anxiety in cats. Should be used to line beds of grieving, depressed, or traumatized cats to help them sleep. Can be given to pregnant or nursing Dams to calm hormones.


(Greater or Lesser) Celandine
Description: Yellow flower with four petals.
Location: Grows better in drier and lower elevation, near twoleg nests and in meadows.
Usage: Juice is trickled into the eye.
Effect: Soothes damaged eyes.


Chamomile
Description: A small, white flower with a large, yellow centre.
Location: Invasive and rare, only grows near twoleg nests or in their gardens.
Usage: Eaten
Effect: Strengthens the heart and soothes the mind. Also given to travelling cats for strength.


(Stitchwort) Chickweed
Description: Tall-stemmed plant with fat, almond-shaped leaves.
Location: Mostly in HemlockClan.
Usage: Eaten, such as catmint/catnip.
Effect: Treats greencough, though catnip is often preferred. Can cause miscarriages in pregnant queens and can cause diarrhea or vomiting if too much is consumed.


Colt's-Foot
Description: A flowering plant with yellow or white flowers resembling dandelions. Grows best in newleaf.
Location: Near twoleg nests and meadows.
Usage: Leaves chewed into a pulp.
Effect: Eases breathing or kitten-cough, as well as cracked or sore pads. Consuming too much can cause miscarriages. Leaves can be used to carry dry herbs.


Comfrey Root
Description: It has large leaves, small bell-shaped flowers, which are pink, blue, or purple, and fat, black roots. Tangy smell.
Location: Damp, grassy places, such as BirchClan.
Usage: Roots are chewed into a poultice. Can also be lined in one's nest.
Effect: Repairs broken bones or soothes wounds. Also used for wrenched claws. Can be used for itching or for inflammation on stiff joints. Also eases stiffness on wrenched shoulders when lined in a nest. Can be used for burns.


(Oxeye) Daisy Leaf
Description: Thick, dark green, oval shaped leaves.
Location: Mostly in AspenClan or close to twoleg nests.
Usage: Chewed into a paste. However, every part of the plant is edible and safe to eat in any quantity.
Effect: Eases the pain of aching joints. It is also a travelling herb.


Dandelion
Description: Common yellow-flowered plant with long, hollow stems. After flowering is finished, the flower transforms a sphere made out of hundreds of smaller white florets with seed heads at the bottom that connect to the flower head.
Location: Almost everywhere.
Usage: The white liquid is thought to be applied to bee stings. All parts of the plant are edible raw.
Effect: Thought to soothe and heal bee stings. Its leaves can also be chewed to act like a painkiller. Good source of potassium, vitamin a, and vitamin c.


Dock
Description: Common, large-leafed plant with a tangy smell and taste.
Location: Everywhere.
Usage: Chewed up and applied to scratches. Similar to sorrel. Also can be put in one's nest during sleep.
Effect: Soothes scratches, though can sting when being applied. Soothes sore pads. If placed in nests, it can ease the pain of wounds. Extremely poisonous in high amounts.


(Canada) Goldenrod
Description: A tall plant with bright, yellow flowers.
Location: Grows well everywhere that isn't too damp.
Usage: Chewed into a poultice. The flowers and seeds are edible.
Effect: Good for healing wounds.


Hawkweed
Description: Small green plant with yellow and orange flowers.
Location: Grows near drier areas but can often be found growing alongside daisies.
Usage: Eaten, as Hawkweed is a close relative of sunflowers and daisies.
Effect: Like catmint but not as strong.


Honey
Description: A sweet, golden-coloured liquid made by bees.
Location: In bee nests, however it's best to wait until a next is abandoned close to Leafbare, and then to store the whole nest in the Keeper's cache so they can use it throughout Leafbare as it does not rot easily.
Usage: Eaten, or given by moss soaked in it.
Effect: Soothes infections, is a great remedy for smoke-damaged or sore throats, helps cats swallow other concoctions, helps soothe coughing, and gives energy. Must be eaten in small amounts or can make a cat sick.


Horsetail
Description: A tall, bristly-stemmed plant, referred to with fleshy stalks.
Location: Grows everywhere near water in all different species.
Usage: Chewed to a poultice, and applied to wounds.
Effect: Treats infections and stops bleeding.



Common Lavender
Description: A small purple flowering plant, grows lower to the ground compared to common lavender.
Location: Grows best in AspenClan and MapleClan's clearings.
Usage: Rubbed/placed on an animal's body to hide the scent of death. Can be put in the nest of a cat with anxiety to calm them.
Effect: Also a herb used to hide the scent of death. Calms apprehension and anxiety.


Lungwort
Description: An herb with dark green leaves speckled with grey.
Location: Fairly rare, grows in AspenClan's lowland.
Usage: Eaten.
Effect: Cures yellowcough, not a lot known about it yet.


Mallow Leaves
Description: Large fuzzy leaves from a flowering shrub; sweet rose scent.
Location: Grows best near shore, but best collected at sunhigh, when they are dry. Very common.
Usage: Eaten.
Effect: Soothes bellyache. However, the entire plant is edible.


(Pot) Marigold
Description: A low-growing flower; yellow to bright orange.
Location: Near twoleg nests which are close to water.
Usage: Petals or leaves chewed in a poultice. Juice can be used as well.
Effect: Stops infection. Stops bleeding. Used for inflammation of stiff joints.


(Opium) Poppy Seeds
Description: Tiny, round black seeds that are shaken out of a dried poppy flowerhead.
Location: Common around twoleg nests.
Usage: Chewed on.
Effect: They can help a cat sleep, soothe shock or distress, or ease pain. Not recommended for nursing dams, or kits.


Ragwort Leaves
Description: Tall shrub with yellow flowers. Tastes foul to cats.
Location: Most common in BirchClan where it is especially damp.
Usage: Crushed and chewed; it can help aching joints. Consuming too much in one's lifetime will cause liver damage. So really Keepers should only use this if the cat is okay with the risk.
Effect: Treats aching joints and keeps a cat's strength up.


(Red) Raspberry Leaves
Description: Soft to the touch, but with jagged edges.
Location: Found on raspberry bushes which are most commonly found in MapleClan and AspenClan.
Usage: A painkiller, and can help stop bleeding during kitting by clotting.
Effect: Eases pain, or stop bleeding.


Seaweed
Description: Differs in appearance, but is generally green and slimy and covered in insects when harvested.
Location: Washes up on the shores of all clans.
Usage: Since there is no rush in these clans, they discovered using cleaned and somewhat dry seaweed is much more effective for binding broken bones and can be left on for a long time.
Effect: Help holds a broken limb in place, can even be used to heal a broken tail.


White Snakeroot
Description: Broad spiny leaved plant with little white flowers.
Location: Grows mainly in MapleClan.
Usage: Eaten.
Effect: Cures diarrhea.


Wood Sorrel
Description: A little white or yellow plant which grows across rocks and dry ground.
Location: Found mostly in AspenClan.
Usage: Eaten.
Effect: Builds up appetite because the oxalates in it causing in interference in nutrient absorption, which will make cats who're depressed, grieving, or in shock have the desire to eat.


Stick
Description: Thin wooden protrusions that grow on and fall from trees.
Location: Can be found anywhere there are trees, but it's best to use birch sticks as other sticks can have toxins.
Usage: Cats in pain bite it when other medicine is either unavailable or not recommended. Also used to help broken legs heal.
Effect: Distracts cats from pain.


Stinging Nettle
Description: It has green, spiny seeds.
Location: Grows best in HemlockClan.
Usage: The seeds are eaten by a cat who's swallowed poison, or the leaves are chewed into a poultice for a wound. The stems can also be chewed.
Effect: Induces vomiting, or brings down swelling, respectively. Can be mixed with comfrey to help heal broken bones. Helps with wounds. Chewing the stems helps fight against infection.


Sweet-Flag
Description: Is actually Sweet-Sedge by it's proper name. Thick green stem with long buds at the top.
Location: Grows through all seasons in BirchClan.
Usage: One must swallow the sap. Big stalks are also edible.
Effect: Eases infection.


Tansy
Description: The tansy plant has round, yellow leaves, and has a very sweet and strong scent, making it good for disguising a cat's scent.
Location: Found in BirchClan near the twoleg nest and around the lighthouse.
Usage: To be consumed, but only in small doses.
Effect: Cures coughs. Can be used to cure wounds and poisons. Stops cats from getting greencough. Soothes throats.


Mother of Thyme
Description: A little purple flower.
Location: Best in really dry and sunny places like AspenClan.
Usage: Chewed up, the oil it releases is an antiseptic. Also has a fresh lemon scent and can be placed on corpses.
Effect: Cleans dirty or infected wounds. Hides the scent of death or illness.


Garlic
Description: A strong-smelling plant.
Location: Near twoleg nests.
Usage: Ticks and fleas hate garlic.
Effect: Removing ticks and fleas from one's pelt.


Willow Bark
Description: Bark of most trees and bushes in the willow family.
Location: Found everywhere.
Usage: The bark of both willow trees and willow bushes is rich in tannins and salicin, which is similar to aspirin. It should be crunched up and tediously chewed into a pulp. Much easier to obtain then poppy seeds, and is safe for dams to use as well unlike poppy seeds.
Effect: Eases pain, should not be placed on an open wound.


Willow Leaves
Description: Leaves of the willow tree or willow shrubs.
Location: Found everywhere.
Usage: Eaten.
Effect: Decreases fever, can help with toothaches.


(Pipsissewa) Umbrella Wintergreen
Description: Easily identifiable by it's strangely shaped pink berries.
Location: Grows in lush and healthy grass, mostly in MapleClan.
Usage: Mushed into a paste.
Effect: Can be used as an antiseptic, consuming it can relieve UTIs.


Common Yarrow
Description: A flowering plant.
Location: Primarily closer to the ocean in AspenClan and HemlockClan.
Usage: Its leaves are chewed into a poultice that can be given to cats or applied to a wound depending on the situation.
Effect: Extracts poison from wounds. Will make a cat vomit up toxins. The ointment will soften and help heal cracked pads.


Usnea
Description: Other names are Spanish Moss or Beard Lichen. A pale greyish/green lichen that grows like leafless mini-shrubs or tassels anchored on bark or twig.
Location: HemlockClan primarily, however it thrives on any tall hemlock trees.
Usage: Press over wound.
Effect: To soak up and stop (or slow) the bleeding. It may also be used to bind broken bones.







Poisons


(Canadian Yew) Deathberries
Description: Red berries from the dark-leaved, poisonous yew bush.
Location: Only found in the dense parts of HemlockClan.
Usage: Sometimes used to kill other cats by making them eat the berry, such as elders who are suffering from old age and pain, or kittens born with painful and lethal defects.
Effect: Kills a cat within minutes when consumed.


Purple Foxglove
Description: A brightly coloured bell-shaped flower. The entire plant, not just the seeds, is extremely poisonous.
Location: Found in small bunches in MapleClan and AspenClan.
Usage: They are used to treat the heart.
Effect: They can easily cause paralysis and heart failure.


Black or Bittersweet Nightshade
Description: A small shrub with faintly scented, bell-shaped flowers that are purple tinged with green in colour. Black Nightshade berries are black when ripe, Bittersweet Nightshade berries are red when ripe, and let off an unpleasant odor.
Location: Found in BirchClan, close to the lighthouse.
Usage: Unlike Deadly Nightshade, this nightshade will cause a much slower and much more painful death.

Effect: Poisonous.
